GEMS was registered on 1 January 2005 specifically to meet the healthcare needs of government employees. We offer six excellent healthcare benefit options. Our goal is to help public service employees and their families to get the best possible healthcare at the most affordable rate. Smart Schools is an initiative by The Future of Energy (TFE) designed to help under-resourced schools access affordable, reliable and clean electricity without the upfront cost of purchasing solar infrastructure. Through the Smart Schools model, solar PV and battery systems are acquired, installed, operated and maintained on behalf of participating schools, which simply purchase the clean electricity generated by the system at a tariff approximately 44% below current municipal electricity costs, delivering immediate and meaningful savings. The model turns energy savings into resources for education, allowing money that would otherwise be spent on electricity to support teachers, learning materials, infrastructure upgrades and other critical school needs, while solar and battery storage provide greater energy resilience, including keeping schools powered during load shedding. Our pilot at Rocklands Primary School in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, demonstrates the model in practice, and Smart Schools is now building a growing pipeline of schools for wider deployment. At scale, our ambition is simple: use the energy transition to put more resources back into education, creating cleaner, more resilient schools while ensuring the financial benefits of renewable energy reach the communities that need them most.
